Supporting A4S – Sustainability and Trusteeship

Pi Partnership were first introduced to A4S in May 2021 when they presented their thoughts on the role of trusteeship in driving forward their primary sustainability objectives. At that time, they were very much focused on working with larger schemes, but even then it was clear that the combined assets within smaller schemes also had a significant role to play.

Roger Cooper, as the Chair of our Trustee operation, become more closely involved in October 2021, when he joined the A4S committee focusing on bringing sustainability into the forefront of trustee discussions and developing an integrated approach to working with investment managers.

Alongside the evolution of scheme funding levels, it had become clear that sustainability in pension funds didn’t finish at buyout of assets, it continues, just with a different owner. This led to the establishment of the Sustainability Principles Charter for the bulk annuity process, and Pi Partnership were delighted to be the first Professional Trustee firm to sign this charter and have incorporated these principles across our approach to trusteeship and the bulk annuity selection process.

Bulk Annuity Progress Report 2025

It is fantastic to see that two years on from the launch of this Sustainability Principles Charter, they have reached an important milestone. The 2025 Progress Report shows that ALL UK bulk purchase annuity providers have now committed to adopt unified sustainability principles, strengthening the integration of sustainability into decision making.

With the increasing levels of assets in Defined Contribution schemes, as well as increasing Master Trust consolidation and the introduction of ‘productive finance’, the importance of sustainability continues to be at the forefront of developments – and we look forward to celebrating the next milestone.
