Professional Trustee

Darren is a highly experienced professional trustee with over 30 years in the pensions industry, including the last 8 years focused on trusteeship. A qualified actuary, former authorised investment consultant, and Accredited Trustee through the Association of Professional Pension Trustees, Darren is widely recognised throughout the pension industry for his technical knowledge and practical insight.

As a founding owner of Align Pensions, Darren acts as Chair, Co-Trustee, and Sole Trustee across a wide range of schemes. His actuarial and investment background allows him to bring strategic clarity to trustee boards, particularly when navigating complex funding and investment challenges. He is adept at shaping and delivering long-term scheme strategies and works closely with the sponsor to align objectives and ensure that schemes are run in an efficient manner that makes the best use of both management time and available budget. This includes working closely with advisers to monitor service delivery and ensure strong budget controls.

Darren has expertise in GMP equalisation, having advised on the Lloyds Banking Group legal case earlier in his actuarial career. He has since helped numerous schemes implement efficient and well-governed GMPe solutions. In addition, he has led multiple buy-in transactions and is currently guiding a number of schemes through preparation for buy-in and wind-up.

Respected for his collaborative and inclusive approach, Darren builds strong working relationships with employers, advisers, and co-trustees. His clear, accessible communication style helps stakeholders understand complex issues and make confident, informed decisions.

With a focus on robust governance, risk management, and effective stakeholder engagement, Darren ensures that the schemes under his care are well-positioned for the future, whether pursuing long-term sustainability or preparing for endgame.
