Managing to wind up 14 insured DC pension schemes despite the best efforts of whichever insurer is involved to make matters as convoluted and painful as possible.

Tim Sansom

Tim Sansom

Professional Trustee and Scheme Manager

Tim brings over 30 years of experience in the pensions industry, with deep expertise across both DB and DC arrangements. Before joining Pi, he led Equitable Life’s Final Salary Department, where he was responsible for the actuarial, administrative and documentation services across the organisation’s portfolio of DB schemes.

Since 2021, Tim has focused on delivering independent trustee services to a range of DB, DC, and hybrid schemes. He has successfully overseen the wind-up of several small, insured DC schemes, managing complex processes with determination and efficiency despite insurer-related delays. He has also completed buy-ins for a number of smaller DB schemes, typically under £20 million, and is now guiding these schemes through the transition to buy-out, wind-up and GMP equalisation or rectification.

Tim is known for developing creative and pragmatic solutions, particularly for small and complex schemes. He has collaborated closely with advisers to design innovative approaches for hybrid schemes with DB underpins, allowing benefits to be secured for members without the need for a buy-in transaction. His ability to deliver cost-effective outcomes is especially valuable in these cases.

In addition, Tim has worked on two Fraud Compensation Fund cases where claims were successfully accepted, resulting in members recovering nearly all of the funds originally transferred. These schemes often operate with minimal budgets and without established procedures, requiring flexibility, lateral thinking and close collaboration with all parties involved, which are strengths that Tim brings to all of his trustee appointments.

Tim is a member of the PASA Accreditation Committee and is enthusiastic about ensuring members receive high-quality service from scheme administrators. He combines technical expertise with a practical, member-first mindset to deliver effective and efficient outcomes.
